About

The Kingdom Behind the Name

Long before modern borders, the Kingdom of Kongo rose on the western coast of Central Africa. Founded around 1390 with its royal capital at Mbanza Kongo, it grew into one of the most sophisticated states of its age — a realm of provinces and governors, of copper, ivory, raffia cloth and salt, ruled by the Manikongo beneath the sign of the crowned leopard.

The kingdom lived by its waters. The mighty Nzadi river — which the world would come to call the Congo — carried its trade, fed its fields and gave the kingdom its rhythm. Its markets moved with palm wine, honey and harvest; its courts received envoys from across the seas.

Kongo Beverages carries that inheritance into every bottle, can and sachet we craft. From our home in Johannesburg, South Africa, we brew, blend and bottle drinks worthy of a royal table — honest ingredients, clean design, and a story that began six centuries ago.
